Magic Carpet - Arts Resource Centre for Buxton
The Magic Carpet project seeks to provide a resource centre for the Buxton area that combines community and arts organisations in one building, allowing them to interact in creative ways.
A feasibility study for this project has been undertaken by High Peak CVS & Bridgehead Arts.

UPDATE (28 Apr 2004) - The Robinson's building has had another offer from a private business which thas been accepted. The purchased of the building for the Magic Carpet by the voluntary sector could not happen, as no organisation was prepared to bear responsibility for the building.

In terms of development work, the Magic Carpet continues with creation of a Management Committee, which is being coordinated by Sorrel from Bridgehead Arts. Buxton Town Centre Co-ordinator, Jean Ball, is already identifying potential alternative buildings in the Buxton area and hopefully a Development Trust will be in place to enable these opportunities to be accessed.

The premises being considered are located close to Buxton Market Place - an area presently under regeneration.

This large building on the intersection of Market Street and South Avenue is owned by Robinson Carpets. It has three main floors plus a basement, and is partly occupied by Buxton-4-Youth.

By locating the proposed communal workspace in the centre of Buxton it will promote the sustainable growth and regeneration of the town, at the heart of the surrounding Peak District.

The Magic Carpet feasibility study, to look at establishing a creative base in Buxton, has been commissioned by Bridgehead Arts Ltd - a newly-established company of artists who aspire to increase participation in and enjoyment of the arts in their community through networking and support.

This study is being undertaken by High Peak CVS - an infrastructure organisation supporting and facilitating the development of voluntary and community groups through provision of practical services and resources.

In a wide-ranging consultation High Peak CVS have sought the views of interested organisations, individuals and businesses to establish their requirements from the community space. Already a substantial number of creative people, businesses and community groups have expressed interest in premises in Buxton town centre and have recognised the potential advantages of working in a shared building.

Possible uses being considered for development of the building are:
REHEARSAL/PERFORMANCE SPACE - WORKSHOP FACILITIES - MEETING ROOMS - OFFICES
EXHIBITION GALLERY - COMMUNITY CAFE - ARTS RETAIL OUTLET - INTERNET SUITE
STUDIOS - INFORMATION AREA - AUDIO & VIDEO RECORDING - RADIO STUDIO - TRAINING
If your organisation, or you as an individual, have an interest in using such community space, either as a resident partner or for occasional applications, then please contact High Peak CVS to make your needs known and to
express your support for the project.
