Environment
Sustainable development
seeks to balance economic, social and environmental factors
so that there can be growth and progress while protecting
the world we live in.
So, alongside funding sustainability, the sustainable development
of voluntary and community organisations involves minimising
their adverse impact on the environment - locally and globally.
This includes both the protection of our environment from
harm and conserving its natural resources and habitats.
As part of the SUSTAIN project we offer information on recycling,
energy efficiency, renewable energy, conservation and using
technology to reduce consumption. |
|
 |
Reduce
Consumption
The
best way to conserve resources and protect the environment
is to reduce consumption of products. One of the
key resources that we need to conserve is energy, as current
methods of production are largely unsustainable and contribute
to global warming through emissions of carbon dioxide. Remember
also that all the products and materials we use involve
energy in their production and transport.

Local
Reuse
The very
best form of recycling is reuse, where unwanted manufactured
products are reconditioned for other people to use.
Charity shops are the mainstay of such reuse for many personal
and small household items. For other products there are specialist
organisations.
Glossopdale
Furniture Project - collect, restore and recycle
home and office furniture. The project can accept most items
of furniture in good condition (all upholstery must comply
with 1990 fire regulations). They also take household
|
items such as curtains, bedding, crockery and pots and pans,
and most electrical goods in working order - but not cookers,
microwaves or washers. Collections are made Tuesday, Wednesday
and Thursday in Glossop, Monday afternoon in New Mills and
Friday afternoon in Buxton.
Those on low
income can receive furniture and other household goods for
a minimal charge. In the workshops furniture is restored
and new items are also created from reclaimed wood - coffee
tables, footstools, bird boxes, planters, toy boxes, etc.
These can be viewed by the public every Friday 9.30am-3.30pm.

Local
Recycling
Every year
the average household produces 1 ton of rubbish, 90% of which
goes into landfill sites.
Much of this is material that could be recycled, saving valuable
resources.
To become a recycler, you need to know what recycling facilities
are available near you - what to take where.
High Peak Borough Council now operates a fortnightly kerbside
green-box collection service for newspaper & magazines,
glass bottles & jars, steel & aluminium cans, textiles
& shoes. Many of these materials can also be recycled
at supermarket and car-park collection points. |
For most of us the bigger problem is knowing where to recycle
other materials and equipment. A useful resource is the 'Bank
Locator' database on the Recycle
More website. By selecting a specific type of |
| aluminium
cans - batteries - books - cardboard - CDs - clothes
- coins - computers - curtains - fluorescent tubes -
fridges - furniture - glass - hearing aids - inkjet
cartridges - junk mail - light bulbs - medical equipment
- medicines - metals - mobile phones - motor oil - office
furniture - organic waste - paint - paint stripper -
paper - plastic - printed circuit boards - printer cartridges
- sewing machines - spectacles - stamps - steel cans
- televisions - tools - tyres - vegetable oil - vinyl
records - yellow pages - wood |

material and entering
your postcode or town you can find the nearest recycling point.
This may be some distance away if the material is unusual, but it
may be possible to transport a variety of things at once, to wait
until you travel in that direction, or to combine recycling efforts
with other organisations and people.
The
following list covers a number of collection points in and
around the High Peak area that deal with more unusual materials:
