Changes to Financial Thresholds for Charities

The Government published its response to the consultation 'Financial Thresholds in the Charities Acts – Proposals for Change' as this newsletter was being compiled.  The recommendations will be introduced in secondary legislation by the end of the 2008/09 financial year.  Basic details in the news release – we'll cover further in due course.

Absence Levels Rise

Staff absence levels have risen in the non-profit sector over the past year, according to a survey by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development, as reported by Plaza Publishing news alert.  Employee absence had risen from 3.6 per cent to 4.2 per cent of working time lost.  As we've noted before, CIPD member organisations in the survey are likely to be at the larger end of the scale so this may not be typical across the sector.  www.charityfinance.co.uk/home/content.php?id=2128&pg=15&cat=58

Group Aims to Protect Volunteer Rights

Third Sector magazine has reported that a Volunteer Rights Group, to protect volunteer rights, has been set up by twelve former volunteers who walked out from York CAB in protest over the treatment of a colleague.  See www.thirdsector.co.uk/News/839804/

Finding Related Ways to Take Action

A web 'widget' that automatically recommends ‘related ways to take action’ to readers of your blog or website has been created by Social Actions.  Working in similar ways to Google Ads, but taking a bit longer to load, it identifies keywords on a page and lists related social change campaigns drawn from twenty social action platforms such as Kiva, Idealist.org and PledgeBank.  These have a strong American slant, but you can see how effective (or not) this is currently on a UK site by looking bottom left on VoluntaryNews, www.voluntarynews.org.uk  (Source: Nonprofit Online News)

Popular Participation, Local Democracy and Grassroots Organisation

Nonprofit Online News has spotted that 'Community Power and Grassroots Democracy: The Transformation of Social Life', published in 1997 but out-of-print, can be read online at www.idrc.ca/en/ev-9378-201-1-DO_TOPIC.html  An examination of popular participation, local democracy and grassroots organisation, its case studies look at the role of community organisations as guarantors of meaningful participation, action and development.

Competencies for Sector Techies

Version 1.0 of an ICT standards and skills guide 'Improving Circuit Rider Service to Voluntary and Community Organisations – Tools to Build Circuit Rider Competencies' has been published by Lasa. It should also be of relevance to ‘accidental techies’ and other ICT workers. (Circuit Rider = someone who helps voluntary organisations implement and manage technology).  Download the pdf, 498KB, from www.ukriders.info/system/files/improving_circuit_rider_service_to+_vcs.pdf

What Makes A Successful Local Compact?

Five half-day regional seminars to explore new research, which has identified key factors behind successful Local Compacts and positive local partnership relationships, have been organised by the Commission for the Compact in September and October (Birmingham, Exeter, London, Liverpool, Newcastle).  www.thecompact.org.uk/events

Trusthouse Charitable Foundation

The Trusthouse Charitable Foundation was formed out of a trust operated by the Council of Forte plc which inherited investments in the Granada Group.  The Foundation was registered with the Charity Commissioners in 1997.  The average grant awarded by the Foundation is £5,000.

With effect from 1st July 2008, the Trustees have agreed new guidelines for grants applications.  If you have previously received a grant, please check the guidelines carefully to see if you are still eligible to apply.  If you have applied recently to the Foundation, your application may still be valid but they advise you to contact them to discuss this if you have not already received a letter of acknowledgement.

There are now two overarching themes to their grants, Rural Issues and Urban Deprivation.  See the greater explanation given on website below.  If you are unsure if your project fits, please call them for an informal discussion.

From July 2009, Trusthouse will start a three year themed grant which will fund projects addressing mental health issues for prisoners and ex-offenders.  If you are working in this field, please call them for an initial discussion.  They will then send you details of how to apply nearer the time.

They have three schemes: Large Grants Scheme for applications between £10,000 and £30,000; Small Grants Scheme for applications between £5,001 and £9,999; Fast Track Scheme for applications of £5,000 and below.

The Yapp Charitable Trust

The Yapp Charitable Trust makes grants to small registered charities in England and Wales, whose annual expenditure is less than £60,000.

This year they plan to give about £500,000 in about 100 grants.  Grants are for work with: elderly people; children and young people aged five to 25; people with disabilities or mental health problems; people trying to overcome life-limiting problems of a social rather than medical origin, such as addiction, relationship difficulties, abuse, a history of offending.

Grants are also made to support charities' work in education and learning, (including lifelong learning).  Priority is given to work that is unattractive to the general public or unpopular with other funders, helps improve the lives of marginalised people and makes effective use of volunteers.

Applications closing date is 30th September 2008 (for consideration in November).

Full information is on the website: www.yappcharitabletrust.org.uk
Application forms are downloadable from the website or by post from the Administrator, Margaret Thompson, on 01484 683403.
