Health is for Life Community Grant Scheme
In the past NHS Tameside and Glossop’s Health is for Life Community Grant Scheme has offered three funding rounds that provided financial support to community groups, voluntary sector groups and registered charities, which aim to improve the health and well-being of local people in the region.
However, unfortunately due to the economic climate that has had a direct impact on NHS funding, at both a national and local level, the PCT has had to review its existing grants policy. Following a comprehensive review, it has been decided that in order to maintain prolonged support for local organisations, only funding for round 1 and 3 will be available for the remainder of year. This was a hard decision but necessary in order to sustain continued investment in schemes that make a real different to the local community.
NHS Tameside and Glossop remains committed to improving the health and well-being of its communities. The PCT will also continue to provide much needed financial support to local groups, such as £53,000 to the Miles for Smiles scheme that enables mobility, by providing free transport for patients attending medical appointments, who would otherwise find it extremely difficult to attend. |

Lower Cost for CRB Checks
The Criminal Records Bureau is to reduce the fee for a Standard Disclosure from £31 to £26 as of 1 October. This is due to an expected increase in the volume of disclosure applications being processed as the new Vetting and Barring Scheme comes into place. However Enhanced checks, which are heavily used by organisations working with children or vulnerable adults, will remain at £46.

Consolidating Charity Law
A draft consolidated Charities Bill, bringing together the Charities Acts of 1992, 1993 and 2006, but not substantially altering charity law, is due to be published by the end of the summer. A consolidated Act should help to simplify the legislation (in England and Wales).

More Employment Connected Volunteering
A new Government-supported scheme to get more people volunteering during the recession has been launched by the Prime Minister. The National Talent Bank will target businesses which are releasing employees for a fixed period, reducing the working week, deferring the start dates for new recruits, but still paying them, or retaining staff whose posts have been made redundant. It will support existing volunteering programmes and initially run for twelve months. Official news item. |

Creating a European Network of Sector Umbrellas
Fifteen voluntary sector umbrella organisations have come together as the European Network of National Associations to share experiences of the recession and increase the voice of the sector across Europe. Spearheaded by NCVO, it includes organisations from Austria, Cyprus, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Northern Ireland, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Scotland and Slovenia. The development of a European charter along the lines of the UK Compact would tackle relations with the European Commission/Parliament.
