Advice for Older People on Keeping Warm in Winter
Help the Aged Offers Free Winter Warmer Packs
Help the Aged is offering older people a free '3 Steps to a Warmer Winter' pack.
Mary O’Riordan, Regional Development Officer for Help the Aged, said; “It is important to keep warm during this winter, which is why we would urge older people to make sure they continue to heat their homes. Anyone concerned about the costs of heating should order one of our free winter warmer packs to find out what support is on offer.”
Three of the key tips included in the pack are:
- Check – if you are worried about your finances this winter and you haven’t thought of claiming benefits before, there are a number of easy ways to check what you may be entitled to. Contact a local benefit advisory service or call Help the Aged SeniorLine on 0808 800 6565. Pension credit, council tax benefit or housing benefit are just a few of the entitlements you may be eligible for.
- Claim – with up to £5 billion in benefits going unclaimed every year you may be able to boost your income. Contact The Pension Service free on 0800 99 1234 to make a claim. Alternatively, inside our free pack there is a coupon you can send off to either request a call from the Pension Service or a home visit.
- Insulate – a properly insulated home could save you around £275 off your annual energy bill. There are a range of ways you can improve the energy efficiency of your home and you may be entitled to free insulation from your energy provider.
A free copy of '3 Steps to a Warmer Winter' is available by calling 0800 089 0800. As well as useful contacts and the latest information and advice about claiming benefits and improving energy efficiency in the home, it includes a free thermometer to monitor room temperature. |

Supporting Communities to Support Individuals
Communities Secretary Hazel Blears has unveiled measures that will see young people from some of the nation's most deprived areas getting involved in activities that will introduce them to a world beyond their immediate neighbourhoods, involve local communities in efforts to raise their aspirations and aim to break the cycle of deprivation that blights some of our communities.

Big Lottery Big Thinking
The Big Lottery Fund would like to hear your thoughts on where funding should go in the future. Don't miss the opportunity to have your say by completing the survey available at www.big-thinking.org.uk. Let them know how you feel funding should be directed in the years ahead.
Kevin Curley, Chief Executive for NAVCA, has emphasised how important responding to the survey is for the VCS. He highlights a specific question which may reduce the amount of money that Big Lottery give to the Voluntary & Community Sector, instead giving more to the Statutory Sector. Question 4 asks whether or not Big should stop its commitment to give 60 - 70% of its funding to the VCS. NAVCA encourages groups to select the 2nd answer to continue this commitment to the VCS. See www.thirdsector.co.uk for more details. |

New Sport England Funding Strategy
Sport England has published its new funding strategy, setting out the investment programmes that will be available to organisations delivering grassroots sport from April 2009. This investment will be focussed on organisations and projects that can deliver the key outcomes of Sport England's overall strategy - ‘grow, sustain and excel'. In simple terms, Sport England wishes to use this funding to increase participation in sport, tackle the problem of people dropping out of sport, and to recognise potential and develop talent. www.sportengland.org/news |
