Festival for a Fiver!
Under-30s can attend any event at this summer’s Buxton Festival for just £5 thanks to an initiative launched by the event’s chairman, Dame Janet Smith. The Festival for a Fiver scheme offers young people the opportunity to see top class opera, classical music and literary speakers at a price they can afford from 10 – 28 July. And with 140 events over 19 days there is plenty of choice.
Each opera is also preceded by a free talk by the director, offering a clear insight into every production. The literary series also offers inspiring opportunities for young people at a key stage in their career development. Featuring 19 speakers at the top of their professions – journalism, politics, academia and the creative arts – this programme offers a true insight into a broad range of potential career paths. Anyone under the age of 30 is eligible for the discount scheme and can book tickets as usual at Buxton Opera House’s box office or over the telephone, but not online. All seats are available for £5, including top price opera tickets, usually £49.
Buxton Festival’s chief executive Glyn Foley said: “This year’s operas confront war, love, hate and death. Many people tell me they don’t like opera and that it’s irrelevant to them. But most haven’t tried it and are unaware that it addresses very contemporary issues.”
The £5 ticket initiative is one of a raft of schemes nationwide to encourage young people to get involved in the arts. It was first introduced in 2008. All Festival for a Fiver tickets must be collected from the Box Office and proof of age provided. The offer excludes Festival lunches.

Derby and Derbyshire Launch Events 'Making Regeneration Work'
Ep2 is a new skills programme for people that work or live in disadvantaged areas in the East Midlands and who are committed to regeneration. It’s different because it is about empowering communities to carry out regeneration for themselves and is founded on the belief that every community, however disadvantaged, contains the seeds of its own transformation. The programme consists of a series of innovative tools and techniques designed to meet the situations that regeneration practitioners and others find themselves in every day.
The ‘Making Regeneration Work’ events provide the background and current policy context to the programme, a description of the Ep2 tools as well as an opportunity to use the tools in a choice of facilitated workshops. The event also includes a presentation on the ‘Coaching for Regeneration’ programme of training and how the application and benefits of a coaching approach can be used to support community and local economic regeneration. The programme has been developed by a range of partners including the New Economics Foundation
The Ep2 programme is supported by emda and these two events are available free of charge. For further information and to book a place please go to the Programme Calendar at www.ep2online.org or email Steve Collins, Programme Manager, at steve@regenerationem.co.uk

The Freedom Programme is held once a week in Buxton commencing Monday 6 July, 6.30 pm to 8.00 pm. Appeal for New First Aiders for Buxton
St John Ambulance Derbyshire is launching a recruitment drive to help find a new generation of first aiders for Buxton and surrounding areas.
Buxton St John Ambulance Division is to be re-launched and St John leaders are now looking for new volunteers to join and help make a difference in their local community.
A St John Ambulance Community First Responder Unit will also be formed to cover Buxton and surrounding villages.
The Buxton St John Ambulance presence will be launched with a display stand at the Buxton Emergency Services Day on Sunday 14 June at Buxton Pavilion Gardens (10.30am-4.15pm).
An information evening for both the St John Ambulance Division and the Community First Responder Unit is to be held on Wednesday 17 June at the St John Ambulance building on Holker Avenue Buxton. The evening will include first aid and first responder demonstrations, and a chance to meet representatives from St John Ambulance.
A rallying call is being issued for local residents to come along to these events and find out what volunteering for St John Ambulance – the nation’s leading first aid charity - is all about.
As members of St John Ambulance new volunteers can help make a real difference to their local community by providing vital first aid cover for local events. There is also the opportunity to go on duty at events across the county and even high profile national events such as the London Marathon.
St John Ambulance volunteers are trained in advanced first aid and lifesaving skills and attend thousands of events each year. In the event of an accident or illness occurring, its volunteers' skills are vital in preventing further harm and saving lives.
St John Ambulance works in partnership with the East Midlands Ambulance Service to operate the Community First Responder scheme – teams of trained volunteers in a local community who can be on an emergency scene quickly, for example, if someone is suffering a heart attack. The Community First Responder can manage the incident and provide prompt immediate care on behalf of the Ambulance Trust before the ambulance arrives, thereby saving vital minutes and allowing treatment such as defibrillation to be more effective. The types of emergency that members of the Community First Responder Unit are called to attend include cardiac arrest, unconsciousness and breathing problems.
For more information about becoming a St John Ambulance volunteer telephone St John Ambulance Derbyshire’s County Headquarters on 0845 1304 999 (local rate) or visit the website at www.sja.org.uk/derbyshire |

Queen's Award to Derbyshire Dales Volunteering Group
First Taste from Darley Dale has been announced as one of 95 volunteering groups from across the UK winning this year’s Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, recognising the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups voluntarily devoting their time for the benefit of others.
The prestigious National Honour, which is equivalent to the MBE, sets the national benchmark for excellence in volunteering, and the activities of those awarded have been judged of the highest standard.
First Taste has received the Award for its work in developing programmes of stimulative inter-active arts educational workshops in residential care / nursing homes and day centres across the Derbyshire Dales.
Speaking of their success, First Taste Chairman, Shirley Davison said: “we are delighted and honoured to receive this prestigious award but our real pleasure lies in the recognition of the importance of meaningful learning opportunities for frail older people in residential care / nursing homes and day centres”

Membership Organisations Wanted to Look Into the Future
The Future of Membership project, run jointly by NCVO and Royal Society of Arts, is doing research into what membership means and what motivates people to become members. As part of this it is looking for membership organisations to take part in a series of focus groups in July. The sessions will take no longer than two hours, at NCVO in London and reasonable travel costs will be reimbursed.

Poor Response From European Candidates On Sector Issues
Euclid Network, the European body for third sector leaders, got a less than five per cent response rate to questionnaires it sent to MEP candidates and national parties fielding candidates in the European elections. Given the generally low voter turnout for such elections, they wonder about the poor interest in active civil society issues.
