Artsplan Youth Arts Training in the East Midlands

Artsplan is has a programme of exciting youth arts training courses taking place this year in partnership with Lakeside Arts Centre in Nottingham.

Using the Arts to Develop Aspiration, Leadership and Potential
23 June 2010, 10 am to 4.15 pm, Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham

The one-day course has been created as part of the legacy for the 2009 ENYAN Campaign and has been developed following a period of research conducted by ENYAN, throughout the nine English regions into how participation in cultural activities can have a significant impact on young people’s development and can give young people the chance to develop important life skills such as creativity, confidence, self discipline, effective communication and the ability to work in teams.

This course is suitable for anyone, professional or voluntary, seeking to use or develop the arts in their work with young people.  It looks to demonstrate how the arts can be used as a mechanism to develop young people’s leadership skills, aspiration and potential.

Creating Safety: child protection and youth arts
7 July 2010, 10 am to 4.15 pm, Lakeside Arts Centre, Nottingham

This one day course is essential training for anyone working within youth arts, but especially those using more physical art forms, such as dance and drama.  Developed in conjunction with South East Dance this course compliments the Arts Council England “Keeping Arts Safe” guidelines developed with the NSPCC.  The training will cover current child protection legislation in line with the requirements of the ISA and Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), within the context of delivering a youth arts project and includes a “safe touch” section, exploring how child protection guidelines can be maintained within more physical art forms.

It will be of benefit to individuals and organisations looking to develop their own child protection policy and maintain standards of good practice, providing practical advice and guidelines to develop confidence and sensible structures around child protection issues within youth arts.

For more information or to book a place on either course, please contact the Artsplan Team via: artsplan@artswork.org.uk or call 02380 682535.

All participants will receive a certificate of attendance upon successful completion of the course and a wealth of practical resources.  Prices for each course, which include lunch and refreshments, range from £110 to £150, with limited bursaries available.  Please also remember that ENYAN members can request a 5% discount on all Artsplan publications and training!

Essential Ingredients of Project Development (EIPD)

EIPD is a professional development programme designed specifically for workers in the Voluntary, Community and Public Sectors; including community activists and workers engaged in developing community projects.  The programme will run between March and October 2010.  Only 25 places will be available, and the programme will involve seven full days of attendance at the University of Derby during this period (22 March, 23 March, 20 April, 18 May, 22 June, 13 July and 19 October), backed up by directed study which will lead to each student assembling and completing a ‘real life’ project proposal for their host/employing organisation.

Participants will graduate at the end of the course with a qualification at HE level 5.
Students will be part-time students and will enjoy the privileges of a student / library card with access to all e-learning privileges.  The programme is worth 30 credits at level 5 (second year degree level equivalent).  The qualification is recognised nationally and transferable onto other degree programmes.  The EIPD programme is a unique professional training opportunity for sector workers and community activists.  It has been designed to deliver up-to-date knowledge about the sector and its challenges and opportunities as well as how to help the sector remain sustainable in a changing world.

Entry qualifications are geared around the ability of a student to benefit from the programme and study at HE level 5.  This is based upon formal qualifications and/or a wide variety of experience based skills.  The programme has been designed around the principles of ‘Action Learning’and will suit a variety of learning styles and abilities from within the sector.  This will include the wide range of abilities held by ‘community activists’ and other workers engaged in community development and partnership working.  Students will work in ‘learning sets’ and build skills as well as accessing resources together throughout the programme.  Each student will start the programme with a personal project idea agreed with the management of the organisation they are representing.  During the programme each student will assemble the project towards the completion of a detailed funding bid or proposal.

Confusion and Information on Vetting and Barring Scheme

BBC1's Panorama looked at the impact of the new Vetting and Barring Scheme, run by the new Independent Safeguarding Authority, in its programme on Monday 8 February, www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00qs991  Volunteering England published survey results on the same day showing high levels of confusion amongst volunteer involving organisations on how the scheme is to operate.  VE said "We still believe the Vetting and Barring Scheme can in some ways improve volunteering organisations' work with children and vulnerable adults, but the ISA must not underestimate the scale of the challenge they face in ensuring volunteering organisations understand how the scheme will affect them.”  See VE news item.

The Government also published a 'Vetting and barring myth buster'.  It gives examples of when registration is not required, focusing on areas highlighted by the media in recent months, in particular personal and family arrangements.

Vetting and Barring Scheme Information Roadshows are being held in England, Wales and NI in coming weeks, dates at www.vbsroadshow.org/DatesAndVenues.aspx  And see Independent Safeguarding Authority for all further information, www.isa-gov.org.uk
