Home-Start Trustees Wanted
Home-Start High Peak recruits and trains volunteers to support parents with young children at home. Without volunteer Trustee members of the management committee the Home-Start scheme would lack management, direction and cohesion.
Trustees are responsible for:
- Making the charity effective
- Providing overall direction
- Maintaining sound management of funds
Being a Trustee can be hard work but is also rewarding, giving many chances for personal development and the chance to give something back to your community. How much of your time it will take can vary, especially if you take on additional commitments but on average it will be around 4 hours per month.
The kind of skills that are in demand are:
- Business links
- Personnel management
- Finance
- Fundraising
- Information technology
- Communications
But you don’t need special qualifications to be a special Trustee. You do need common sense; an understanding of the pressures facing parents today; and a genuine interest in supporting parents in your community. Read the interesting stories and experiences of Home-Start trustees at: www.home-start.org.uk/volunteer/volunteer
INTERESTED? Take the next step to joining Home-Start as a Trustee and call Debbie for an informal chat on 01298 72777 or email home-starthighpeak@hotmail.co.uk |

Data Protection Law: Pragmatic Approach to Large Penalties
The Information Commissioner has announced that he will take a pragmatic approach to new powers allowing penalties of up to half a million pounds for breaches of data protection law (applies across the UK). "Factors will be taken into account including an organisation's financial resources, sector, size and the severity of the data breach, to ensure that undue financial hardship is not imposed on an organisation.” See Out-law news item, which includes a link to the official guidance, at www.out-law.com/page-10657 |

Failure of Public Benefit Test May Not Have Tax Costs
Charities which fail to meet the public benefit test when assessed by the Charity Commission won't be penalised by HM Revenue and Customs as long as they tackle the issue. In response to a question to the Commission from Farrer and Co, HMRC and the Commission issued a joint response just before Christmas.
As reported in a Civil Society news item, HMRC would follow the Charity Commission in allowing a period of transition within which the trustees can draw up and implement an action plan to bring the charity's activities within the definition of public benefit.
