The Art of Engagement Workshop

This day focuses on how the arts can be used to engage people of all ages, in the context of a broad range of agendas, and the potential impact it can have. It will provide an understanding of how engagement in the arts can be used for the exploration and expression of issues, ideas, thoughts and opinions and the links to communication, advocacy and personal development.

It is aimed at organisations and individuals who are interested in developing arts practice in their work and will provide advice and guidance on how to strategically develop, organise and manage arts activity.

Cost:               Free to High Peak voluntary and community groups without paid workers, £25 to voluntary and community groups in the High Peak with paid worker,£35 to voluntary and community groups outside the High Peak, £50 all others.

North Derbyshire Voluntary Action (NDVA) Chief Officer

Salary: £28,862 - £31,348 + 5% pension - 37 hours per week

NDVA is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and energetic person with good management, networking and communication skills to take forward the work of NDVA throughout Derbyshire. NDVA is a health and social care focused infrastructure organisation working to create and maintain effective partnership working between the voluntary and statutory sectors.

Ability to work at a senior level with the voluntary and statutory sectors is essential together with leadership and organisation management skills. Must have an interest and experience in health and social care issues that affect the voluntary sector. 

The post is part of a formal  six day job share arrangement, with the other existing post holder taking responsibility for NDVA’s role in relation to Derbyshire LINk

Safeguarding Survivors and Services Regional Roadshows

Achieving value for money and quality in service provision within a co-coordinated community response to domestic and sexual violence.  A Women's Aid initiative in partnership with the Home Office, and in consultation with regional government offices and the Audit Commission.

Aims

  • Explore how local government and statutory agencies can work together with the voluntary sector to deliver high-quality, cost-effective services for the wide range of survivors in every locality.
  • Identify ways to take forward and ensure provision of high quality domestic and sexual violence services in all areas.
  • Promote the National Service Standards for Domestic and Sexual Violence (NSSDSV) and associated Commissioning Guidance.
  • Promote the Home Office model for a co-ordinated community response to domestic and sexual violence.
  • Facilitate links between policymakers, commissioners and service providers.

Audience

  • Commissioners and Joint-Commissioners;
  • Community Safety Officers and Supporting People Lead Officers;
  • Chairs/Vice-Chairs of Local Strategic Partnerships;
  • Domestic Violence Co-ordinators and strategic/policy lead officers on domestic and sexual violence from all statutory/voluntary agencies; and
  • Specialist domestic and sexual violence service providers.

Health is for Life Community Grant Scheme and Health Fair

In the past Tameside and Glossop PCT have operated a scheme called CELP (Community, Education and Learning Projects) related to Health.  In April 2008 the PCT introduced a new scheme 'Health is for Life Community Grants' (which is separate from the Health is for Life funding stream).

The Scheme is aimed at community groups, voluntary sector organisations and schools within the PCT's boundaries.  Funding is available for groups and schools to develop new projects that have a health focus.

Changes in Statutory Annual Leave

Statutory annual leave increases from 1 April, from 4.8 to 5.6 weeks (that's 24 to 28 days).  This can include the eight bank holidays.  See Sandy Adirondack's legal update on actions to take, at www.sandy-a.co.uk/employment.htm#annualleave or go to Business Link guidance with templates for notifying workers of the change and how to calculate entitlement for part-time and other atypical workers.

First Steps and Basic Information on New Vetting Scheme

A new vetting and barring scheme for England and Wales is being introduced under the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006, for those working with children or vulnerable adults.  The scheme starts properly from 12 October 2009, but the new Independent Safeguarding Authority is to take control of decisions for new referrals under the PoCA, PoVA and List 99 barring lists from 20 January.

Filing VAT Returns Electronically for Most

HM Revenue and Customs is planning to phase out paper VAT Returns with effect from 1 April 2010.  All VAT registered businesses with an annual VAT exclusive turnover of £100,000 or more, and all newly registering businesses, will be required to submit their returns online and make payments electronically.  While paper returns will still be an option for the remaining VAT registered businesses, this will be reviewed by 2012.

Occupational Standards for Sector Development Workers

A new set of National Occupational Standards is being developed for development workers in infrastructure organisations (sector support bodies), who support other voluntary and community organisations.  Feedback on the draft is welcome to the end of February 2009, with a questionnaire due back by 16 February – go to www.ukworkforcehub.org.uk/dwnosconsultation for details.

Occupational Standards for Legal Advice

Skills for Justice is currently reviewing the suite of National Occupational Standards for the Legal Advice sector, to ensure that they are up to date and applicable to all four UK constituent countries.  The revised NOS are currently available for online consultation until 30 January.  CommunityNI news item or go direct to -

Providing New Opportunities for Young People

The thirty three local authorities across England which will pilot a programme from youth volunteering charity v to get young people volunteering full time in children's services have been announced.  The vTalent Year scheme starts in March offering placements in children's centres, youth work, play and other services.  See v's news item at www.wearev.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=247  The list of councils is on the CYP Now news item at www.cypnow.co.uk/bulletins/Daily-Bulletin/news/873287/

The scheme is connected with the government's New Opportunities White Paper published on 13 January.  Voluntary organisations will be able to play a role in two other New Opportunities programmes designed to increase the life chances of disadvantaged people.  Inspiring Communities will have £10 million to encourage volunteering and offering mentoring and apprenticeships with professionals from the commercial and not-for-profit sectors.  The Homes and Communities Agency will be given £15 million to create a range of local initiatives involving the third sector.  Third Sector magazine news item at www.thirdsector.co.uk/News/873263/ (registration required) or see the New Opportunities website at www.hmg.gov.uk/newopportunities.aspx

IT Volunteering Charges

IT4Communities, the brokering service for IT professionals who want to volunteer, has introduced an administration fee.  The £85 annual cost covers support for as many volunteer requests as wanted in the year.  No charge to register, and a bursary scheme is being developed for small, low-income organisations – www.it4communities.org.uk
