Volunteer Opportunities at Barnardo's
Louise Noble is the new volunteer coordinator for Barnardo’s Derbyshire, based in Belper but workimg across the county. Her role is to recruit, train and support volunteers locally within Barnardo’s.
Barnardo’s is an organisation that works with children and young people aged from 0-19, and their families. Volunteers perform essential, supportive and complimentary roles to those undertaken by paid staff and without their involvement Barnardo’s would not reach as many families as it does. The volunteer role is an enriching one which benefits the children, young people and families who use the service, as well as staff and the volunteers themselves.
They have a number of different roles that volunteers can participate in, such as:
- Assisting and supporting staff in the planning and running of children’s activities
- Advocacy for children and young people
- Supporting carers within parenting groups
- Assisting staff and families within Family Group Meetings
- Befriending and mentoring
- Office support
If interested please contact Louise Noble, Volunteer Coordinator, Barnardo’s Family Support Service, 1st Floor Office Suite, De Bradelei Mill House, Chapel Street, Belper, Derbyshire DE56 1AR. Tel: 01773825923. Email: louise.noble@barnardos.org.uk
They are currently seeking volunteers in the north of the county (Chesterfield/Bolsover areas) and the High Peak area. |

Money Survival Kit for Single Parents
One Space Site for Finance and Debt Advice
The Single Parent Action Network (SPAN) is providing a 1-2-1 benefits, money and debt advice service to help one parent families on low income avoid debt and financial crisis.
We are asking front-line practitioners if they will signpost single parents to the One Space site and help them to avoid the debt that is very often triggered by Christmas.
SPAN’s social networking site for single parents, www.onespace.org.uk has recently launched a new online ‘Money Survival Kit’ to give immediate help to single parents facing financial crisis. SPAN is encouraging front-line staff in children’s centres, community groups, housing associations and faith groups to support single parents in accessing the site. It also contains useful information for front-line staff on finance and debt issues.
The One Space ‘Money Survival Kit’ provides a range of money saving solutions which single parents can access at a time and place which is convenient for them. The online resources include 1-2-1 finance and debt advice via email as well as solution-based case studies that reflect real life experiences.
Debt at this time of year can spiral out of control, especially through door stop lenders and high bank charges. This can have a knock-on effect, leading to not paying the rent or council tax - building up arrears and then potentially facing the bailiffs. Another significant trigger point for debt is separation and divorce. There is so much to deal with – applying for benefits/tax credits; maintenance issues/mortgage and housing issues. The officialdom and complexity of it all means that problems can build up making it harder to address, especially when there is also the emotional pressure and depression.
For more information on real life practical help for those facing financial problems visit www.onespace.org.uk and click on ‘Money Survival Kit’

Minister to Push for Local Authorities to Fund Volunteer Centres
Angela Smith, the Minister for the Third Sector, will ask Barbara Follett, the minister for Communities and Local Government, to encourage local authorities to fund volunteer centres.
At a recent meeting with Justin Davis Smith, chief executive of Volunteering England, Smith said she would raise the organisation's concerns about volunteer centre funding with the Communities and Local Government department. She also said she would try to set up a meeting between the department and Volunteering England and would consider writing a foreword for a Volunteering England publication encouraging local authorities to fund volunteer centres. At the Labour Party conference in Brighton in September, Smith said that volunteer centres should not expect new money from the Office of the Third Sector.

Volunteering to Enhance Employability and Skills
The Economic and Social Research Council has published 'The Value of Volunteering – helping to build an inclusive and cohesive society', which has contributions from academics, government, third sector organisations and volunteers. It highlights the relevance of volunteering to those groups who are the furthest from the labour market, and its ability to enhance both employability and social cohesion and argues for more effective use of European Social Fund.
