Good Practice in Volunteering
Derbyshire Unemployed Workers’ Centres have joined forces with The Volunteer Centre (Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire) to organise free training sessions which promote and share good practice in working with volunteers from socially excluded or disadvantaged groups. These sessions are funded by Goldstar.
Representatives from any voluntary sector organisation who are currently or thinking about working with volunteers are welcome to attend one of the sessions, where we will be discussing recruiting volunteers, benefit entitlements for volunteers and the law surrounding expenses. As the threat of large scale redundancies loom, there has never been a better time to develop your organisation’s volunteer expertise as the numbers of those seeking to develop their skills and improve their work prospects increase.
The session dates and locations are as follows:
Thursday 12 February – North Wingfield Community Centre (between Chesterfield and Clay Cross), 9.45 am – 12.00 pm
Tuesday 24 February – Saints Parish Centre, Chesterfield, 9.45 am – 12.00 pm
Thursday 12 March – South Normanton Community Centre (near Alfreton), 9.45 am – 12.00 pm
Hot drinks and breakfast pastries will be served (if you need any more encouragement to attend!).
Numbers are limited at each event to 25 (the Chesterfield session is almost full but there are currently plenty of spaces on the other two) – so first come first served. For a booking form please contact Sarah at Derbyshire Unemployed Workers’ Centres on 01623 748161 or at sarah.walters@duwc.org.uk |

Energy Auditing Courses
Community Action for Energy organises a range of workshops for community groups across the country. There are two courses running in this area soon – both are called ‘Energy Auditing’ and will teach you the basics of doing an energy audit on a community building. The first is on 3 February in Nottinghamshire, and the second is on 4 March in Derbyshire. Courses are free and booking is essential. For more information and to book a place, have a look at www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/cafe and click on ‘training and events’. |

Lightbulb Libraries
A company called Eco-St loan out lightbulb libraries to schools, businesses and community groups. The library is basically a big suitcase with around 40 different low energy lightbulbs inside, including bulbs for awkward fittings, dimmer switches and so on. The idea is that each person who borrows the library can take it home, try out the different light bulbs, and hopefully convert their whole house to energy saving bulbs – thus saving loads of money and energy. The library is free to borrow (except for postage costs), and you can find out more here: www.eco-st.co.uk/Light-Bulb-Library-Home.aspx |

Call for Millions in Sector Support
The amount of additional money that the Government ought to provide to help voluntary sector services survive the current economic situation has been the subject of differing views from sector umbrella bodies.
NCVO has come up with the figure of a minimum of £100 million, while chief executives body Acevo had previously called for a £500 million emergency fund for charities. NCVO's figure, amongst other things, includes £12 million to help with mergers, funding direct costs, local support and a matchmaking website. See their press release at www.ncvo-vol.org.uk/press/releases/?id=12452 or Third Sector news item at www.thirdsector.co.uk/channels/Finance/Article/874925/ (registration required). |

Exploring Voluntary Sector Streams
A Funding Commission is being set up by umbrella body NCVO to map the various funding streams available to the voluntary sector. It will also look at how these could change, whether they are adequate or need to be improved, and whether any new ones are needed. The commission will be officially launched at NCVO's annual conference on 18 February.
