The Health and Social Care Conference

Addressing inequalities in wellbeing in the East Midlands

Thurs 25 Feb 2010 at Kettering Conference Centre

This partnership event will bring together the third sector and partners to look at the current changes and challenges for health & social care and will seek answers to the following questions:

  • How can we work together to reduce health inequalities?
  • What role can the Third Sector Health & Social Care Network play in supporting this work?

The day will provide resources to improve third sector’s ability to engage in health and social care opportunities. There is a structured networking opportunity for third sector organisations to learn from other organisations working in the fields of health, wellbeing and social care.

Essential Ingredients in Project Development (EIPD)

2.30 pm, 5 February at Friargate Studios, Derby

The University of Derby Community Regeneration Centre are involved in a wide range of activities relating to the community and voluntary sector including the development of toolkits and community learning programmes.  It has been working with the Derbyshire Learning and Development Consortium and University of Derby Corporate to explore how the sector can be supported to become more effective at developing project proposals and funding bids.  As a result of this groundwork we have developed the ‘Essentials Ingredients in Project Development’ (EIPD) programme which aims to meet the needs of the sector in a time of change and uncertainty.  It will use an ‘action learning’ approach and is designed for workers, volunteers and community activists.

Student participants will come from across Derbyshire and neighbouring areas, and from a variety of backgrounds.  The EIPD learning programme will run from 22 March to October 2010.  Participants will commit to a total of seven days attendance at the University, and will be supported in turning an idea relating to a real life community issue into a detailed and costed funding proposal.

The programme will lead to the award of 30 credits at HE Level 5 (second year degree level).  25 places will be available on the first programme.  To help explain this unique learning opportunity to key partners, there will be a short 90 minute presentation of EIPD at 2.30 pm on Friday 5 February at the Friargate Studios, Derby.

To confirm a place and receive location plan please email j.bowie@derby.ac.uk  For further details contact John Bowie on 01332 594013.

Volunteering Fund

The replacement for the Department of Health Opportunities for Volunteering scheme, the Volunteering Fund, has been announced, offering two grant funding schemes to support volunteering in health and social care in England.

A local grant scheme – to support volunteering in health and social care. Applicants should be connected at a local level to commissioners (e.g. Primary Care Trust, Local Authority)

A national portfolio scheme – larger grants to enable national organisations to deliver more strategic or developmental volunteering programmes.

The strategic priorities for the fund are:

  • Better health and well-being for all - helping you to stay healthy and well, empowering you to live independently and tackling health inequalities
  • Better care for all - the best possible health and social care, offering safe and effective service, when and where you need help and empowering you in your choices
  • Better value for all - delivering affordable, efficient and sustainable services, contributing to the wider economy and nation.

The Fund will also look at how the projects link with the Department of Health Volunteering Strategy, to encourage good practice in volunteering practice in the areas of:· Leadership; Partnership working; Commissioning; Management; Support for individual volunteers.

Around £5 million will be distributed as grants across 2010–2012. Grants are available for up to three years, with a package of grant funding and business support being offered to organisations.

Local projects can be funded up to £35,000 over three years with national projects receiving around £500,000 over 3 years. It is expected that around 55 local projects will be funded in 2010 and again in 2011. Up to 12 national projects will be funded in 2010 and 2011.

Third sector organisations that are planning to run volunteering projects in the health or social care sector can apply for funding. Partnerships, which can include statutory or private partners, can also apply, although non-third sector partners cannot be grant recipients.

Applications for local projects are expected to open in January 2010, with the application process taking 12 weeks. There will be a rolling programme throughout the year, with all regions being covered in each funding year but at different times. Funding rounds will be in the following order during 2010:

· North East and North West
· East Midlands and Yorkshire and Humberside
· South Central, South West and West Midlands
· London, South East and East of England

For information see the Volunteering Fund website.

More Government Support for Trustees Urged

A very short debate on the role of charity trustees was held in the House of Commons on Monday 18 January, at the instigation of Tom Levitt MP.  The main purpose was to highlight the need for government to help support, recruit and retain trustees.
Links to the official video and text at Parliamentary website.

Or see Third Sector news item www.thirdsector.co.uk/News/978346/ which highlights Levitt's point that trustee vacancies outside London are not so easy to find on tools such as Trusteefinder, run by Charity Trustee Networks at www.trusteenet.org.uk/jobs-search

Survey Skills for Social Researchers

A new programme funded by the Economic and Social Research Council is providing opportunities for social researchers to gain a first-hand insight into the survey process in the 'real world' and to improve their skills in survey research methods.  The Survey Skills Programme allows each trainee to select from a range of elements to suit their own needs and constraints, www.surveynet.ac.uk/ssp/introduction.asp.  (Source: VSSN list)

Analysis of Third Sector Survey

See results from Third Sector magazine's State of the Sector survey at www.thirdsector.co.uk/BigIssues/Details/78631/state-sector-survey-results/ compiled from responses from more than 700 charity professionals, covering issues such as money and politics.

The Effectiveness of Chairs of Governing Bodies

Research on the leadership role of chairs of governing bodies (boards, management committees) has been published by Charity Trustee Networks and NCVO.  It is based on a survey on perceptions of the chair leadership role, including the quality of the chair's relationships, chair impact, and the influences on chair leadership.  The least effective chairs were not seen as team players and were unable to manage inadequate performance of others.  Read more and download the full report from www.trusteenet.org.uk/news/what-makes-chairs-governing-bodies-effective

Plain English or Officialese?

The improvement agency for local government, IDEA, has an interesting interview from an academic who has given evidence to parliament on the "Use and abuse of official language".  With many in the community sector having close dealings with council officials, there is always the danger of "going native" and using jargon inappropriately.  Worth a quick read, www.idea.gov.uk/idk/core/page.do?pageId=16268570
