One of our High Peak groups is now able to offer support for anyone wishing to take up outdoor activity to enhance their mental well-being.
Details...
Phill and Mike of Lifefit, a free community club, have been appointed as England Athletics' Mental Health Ambassadors - a new project supported by Mind. They hold free walk/run outdoor activities, especially supporting anyone with mental health issues.
Physical activity has been proven to have a considerable beneficial effect on both mental and physical health. Contact Phill at peakfit2@gmail.com or phone High Peak CVS as an initial contact. Remember these activities are FFF - Friendly, Free and Fun!
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
England Athletics, supported by Mind the mental health charity, have launched a Mental Health Ambassador programme. The programme links to #runandtalk, an England Athletics campaign to improve mental health through running in England by:
- Getting people talking about mental health, sharing their experiences and removing stigma
- Raising awareness of mental health problems
- Supporting people experiencing mental health problems to be physically active through running start, return to and continue running
We’re often told that physical activity is good for our bodies and our minds, but having a mental health problem can make it difficult to get started, for a number of reasons, ranging from negative body image, or a lack of self-esteem through to practical reasons such as having no one to go with or not knowing where to get started.
Initially 128 ambassadors have been appointed from 91 different England Athletics affiliated clubs and registered groups across England. The ambassadors will be working with their clubs/groups on variety of things including:
- Creating a mental health action plan for their club/group.
- Organising specific events or open evenings.
- Creating links with local mental health services/organisations.
- Sharing information on social media about #runandtalk and other related campaigns.
- Starting conversations about mental health.
- Sharing good news stories.
- Supporting leaders, coaches and other volunteers with relevant guidance on mental health.
- Volunteering through Mind and other organisations to support people experiencing mental health problems to start running.

Power to Change has announced its 2016 Community Business Fund.
Details...
This is an exciting programme aimed at inspiring and supporting the development of locally-based and community-led businesses.
Grants of £50,000 to £300,000 are available to support and develop community businesses in England.
The first window for applications will be open 26 April to1 June 2016.
More details and guidance are available at
www.thepowertochange.org.uk/funding/grants/
Competition will be very fierce so make sure you meet all the criteria before embarking on an application. In particular:
Your organisation must be a community business - "In previous funding rounds, over two-thirds of applications were rejected because they didn’t meet our definition of a community business."
What is a community business?
- Locally rooted
- Accountable to the local community
- Broad community impact
- Trading for the benefit of the local community
Competition and success rates
Bear in mind that in previous funding rounds, Power to Change was only able to fund 5 per cent of the applications it received. Please read and follow the guidance notes when published in April and make sure that your bid fits the criteria.
Match funding
Power to Change "will rarely fund alone". For example, it will usually fund a maximum of 75% of the total costs of buying or renovating a building.
When to apply
There will be three opportunities to apply for funding in 2016. "We expect to allocate funding broadly equally across the three rounds, so choosing to apply for a later funding round will not reduce an applicant’s chance of receiving a funding."
Key dates
- 19 April 2016, free Q&A webinar about the programme (booking details to be announced).
- 26 April to 1 June 2016, first application window.
- July 2016, second funding round opens for applications.
- October 2016, third funding round opens for applications.
If you would like to discuss whether this fund is suitable for your needs or help with your bid, contact Esther Jones at High Peak CVS on 01663 735 350 or esther@highpeakcvs.org.uk
