Blythe House Hospice is delighted to announce the launch of a new Carer’s Evening Support Group. The move comes as the Hospice also extends services within the community with their new Hospice at Home service.
Details...
Janet Dunphy, Hospice Director says: "All of our services recognise the importance of caring for families, friends and carers and supporting them in their caring role. We really want to improve and extend the support that we already offer to carers of people with life-limiting illnesses, but we also want to open this out to the whole of the High Peak Community, meaning that anyone who cares for someone can access this service.
Many find caring a rewarding role but it can also be hard work and stressful. It can affect your ability to work, finances, social life and personal well-being. Extending support to carers is a key part of our philosophy of care. Experience tells us that carers need time to talk, share, relax, and quite simply have some time out. If you are caring for a family member or friend, we are here for you."
From 12 April 2016, the support group will meet in the lounge of Blythe House Hospice, and will then take place on the 2nd Tuesday of every month from 5-7pm
The group aims to provide a safe, relaxed environment whereby people can share problems, concerns or experiences with others who are in a similar situation. It can help to develop carer’s coping strategies and enhance self-esteem and confidence.
Group sessions will be facilitated by a team of qualified and experience healthcare professionals and may include such topics as:
● Coping with anxiety
● Knowing where and how to access support
● Managing medication
● Financial and benefit advice
● How to relax - helpful relaxation techniques
● Planning for the future
● Dietary advice and help
If you feel you would benefit from attending a future carer's evening support group or know someone who would, please drop in or call Rachel Cannon or Louise Furmston Tel: 01298 815388 or 01298 875080 for further details.
If you would like to attend the group, but have difficulties due to your caring commitments or transport, please contact either Rachel or Louise.

Power to Change will begin accepting applications for the £10 million Community Business Fund on 26 April 2016, and will be awarding grants between £50,000- £300,000 to support and develop community businesses in England.
Details...
Full criteria will be published on 5 April.
If you would like to apply on 26 April, these are the things to consider:
The process is expected to be highly competitive. Last year we were able to fund just 5 per cent of the applications we received.
There will be a further two funding rounds in July and October 2016. We expect to allocate funding broadly equally across the three rounds, so choosing to apply for a later funding round will not reduce an applicant’s chance of receiving a funding.
They will rarely fund alone. For example, we will usually fund a maximum of 75% of the total costs of buying or renovating a building.
In previous funding rounds, over two-thirds of applications were rejected because they did not meet our definition of a community business. So in order to be considered for funding, you will need to clearly demonstrate that that your organisation meets our four criteria for community business:
- Locally rooted
- Accountable to the local community
- Broad community impact
- Trading for the benefit of the local community
