HUNDREDS of delicious free pastries were distributed to care homes across Derbyshire’s High Peak by The Second Helping Project over the festive period.
Founder and managing director Beth Fitton distributed the tasty treats to residents and staff at seven different care facilities across Glossop and Hadfield.
The Glossop-based project aims to address the gaps between food waste, food poverty and community cohesion.
Beth explains: “When we were offered, through another community group, some delicious pastries made by a major high street retailer, we wanted to ensure that as many people as possible were able to enjoy them.
“It was an incredibly generous donation and I know for a fact it was greatly appreciated by all recipients.
“I established The Second Helpings Project to reduce food waste and insecurity by taking surplus food from high street retailers and making it into free, nutritious meals.
“These are intended to provide sustenance on those days we all encounter when life gets a little too much.
“There’s never any means-testing or judgement involved.”
Founded in 2025, the Second Helping Project aims to combat “food insecurity, promote dignity through access to nutritious meals, and create meaningful opportunities for those most often left behind”.
High Peak CVS has helped the project establish itself as a community interest company (CIC) and provided other practical support about its future development plans.
Beth adds: “We’re committed to helping as many people as possible across Glossop enjoy delicious and nutritious food precisely when they need it – without any judgement.
“I’d like to thank everyone who’s supported us so far… and we’re always looking for new partners to ensure we can support even more families and individuals in 2026 – and beyond.”
