Light at the Town'end' of the tunnel.

High Peak CVS Group Development Workers Deb Boden and Rachel Winterbottom, who is also part of the Social Prescribing Team, made their first socially distant and Covid-safe outing recently when they met up with Mary Craner at the fantastic Townend Community Garden.

This lovely safe and accessible space, created for the benefit of all local residents, is currently flourishing and an ideal spot for the community to utilise while being able to maintain social distancing and adhere to current Covid restrictions safely.

Mary is currently responsible for maintaining the garden as well as running several groups in the space, but she is in desperate need of more willing volunteers to come on board to help share the gardening side of the load.

“We have some great volunteers, but we really do need more people who can commit to more than just popping in for a session once a week as I am struggling to keep on top of everything with all of the organisation of hands-on garden activities as well as most of the administration, fundraising and publicity.

“We’re very keen to welcome other groups to use the garden too. Our communal area would be great for fitness sessions, and there are lots of gardening jobs to be done, but it’s a great area just to meet friends in a safe outdoor space.” Mary explained.

If you have green fingers, are community minded, enjoy gardening, or just fancy giving it a go, Mary would like to hear from you.

Garden volunteering is open to anyone of any age and ability and is a wonderful opportunity, not only to get outside and connect to nature, but can be a very therapeutic activity.

In the garden there are flower and vegetable beds, fruit trees and a quiet area with scented plants. The communal area and paths are suitable for people with limited mobility and wheelchair users. Everyone is welcome to come and help with planting and care of the garden, or just to sit and enjoy the peace and tranquillity.

If you are able to commit on a regular basis Mary and the team at Townend Community Garden would really value your help and support as well as guaranteeing everyone a warm and friendly welcome. Not a gardener? You can always help with managing, fundraising, publicity or organising events!

Townend community garden can be found between Chapel primary school and the Methodist church graveyard.
