A MAJOR free arts event will return to Derbyshire’s Hope Valley this autumn for the second successive year.
The ‘Hope Valley Art Trail by Rail’ event aims to highlight the importance of taking a creative approach to sustainable travel.
Throughout the weekend of September 26 and 27, 2026, both residents and visitors will have opportunity to explore the best of the area’s art and culture by train, as well as on foot and by bus.
Event founder Emily Gait said: “This is one for the diary – everyone can enjoy travelling along Hope Valley’s scenic railway line simultaneously engaging with art and creative activities.
“Artists will be opening their studios, gardens and exhibiting in each village within the Hope Valley on the railway line meaning visitors can buy handmade gifts, get hands-on in creative workshops and enjoy refreshments at local cafes along the way.”
Emily, who works as community engagement lead at Hope Valley Climate Action, is currently seeking artists and volunteers to take part in this year’s event.
She continues: “The timing of this project couldn’t be better as the Department of Transport has recently announced funding to support the Mini Switzerland Project, which is an integrated transport demonstrator, using Hope Valley as the pilot project.
“The Art Trail by Rail 2026 will set an example of how trains and buses can be used to get around the Hope Valley as an alternative to private car use.”
This event is led by Hope Valley Climate Action through the Move More Hope Valley project, which is funded by High Peak Borough Council. The event is also supported by Hope Valley and High Peak Community Rail Partnership and High Peak CVS.
Ross Burnage, chief executive of High Peak CVS, said: “Last year’s Hope Valley Art Trail by Rail project was attended by more than 200 people who discovered how art and creativity could shine a spotlight on the importance of sustainability as well as health and wellbeing in our community.
“We hope that even more people will discover this exceptional part of the world using sustainable transport as the event continues to flourish.”
- The Hope Valley Art Trail by Rail event will take place on both Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, between 10am and 5pm. Further details will be available here: https://hopevalleyclimateaction.org.uk/travel/art-trail-by-rail/
